“SOWAT Music dips further into the fertile dance music talent pool of its home base of Istanbul. This time the label emerges with Pair Of Dirty Shoes, the collaboration of Kaan Duzarat (Shrimpy) and Emrah Arslan (Fattish). Both have been movers in the growing Istanbul scene, with Shrimpy heading the Vesvese label and hosting shows on the influential Dinamo 103.8 FM while Fattish can be found in DJ booths citywide as well as collaborating on many music projects. As Pair Of Dirty shoes the duo try out a variety of sounds from house to nu-disco to techno, mixing and matching tempos and stylistic elements in search of their own cool sound.

“Say That” carries this ethos forward as a track that draws upon disparate dance music elements to create an intriguing house music cut. Low slung bass hits pulse with electricity under a loose rhythm and some mysterious vocal incantations. Calm rhodes chords face off against jarring synthesizer tones that bounce around the stereo field. It’s a dynamic track almost coming off like an in-studio jam session, but tight enough to make it happen on the dance floor.

A trio of remixes play on all these elements to concoct three distinct flavors. Ave Astra, AKA Ave (Menomale Records, Seta Label, Soluble) delivers a deep, dubby house mix of “Say That” capitalizing on the jazzy rhodes lines and adding a delicious, elongated breakdown set to playfully tease nightclub dancers. Next, imprisoned wizard Q-Burns Abstract Message (EIGHT-TRACKS, Eighth Dimension) picks up the percussive thump of the original to craft a rhythmically mesmerizing remix. Sonic squelches, bass drops, and wild synth action abound. Finally, Shrimpy presents his own understated Dub of “Say That,” developing a throbbing growl and a handclap beat into an atmospheric, enthralling electronic music invention.

SOWAT comes correct once again with Pair Of Dirty Shoes and “Say That” … a unique single that could be easily mistaken for a bright, shiny pair of expensive trainers within a DJ’s selection. Keep those feet moving!”
